Everything You Need to Know About Serums

Even if you’re the proud owner of several serums, you might be no less confused about where it fits into your skin care routine. They can be light and delicate, or syrupy and oil-based, and while they do hydrate, you will still need to apply moisturiser. To clarify this nourishing beauty must, we dive headfirst into the wide world of serums.

So, what exactly is a serum?

Essentially, a serum is a potent formula with a super-fine texture, meant for application after you’ve applied your water essence, but before moisturising, with the aim to deliver ingredients to your skin. Unlike moisturisers or oils, serums are a great tool for targeting specific skincare concerns, such as fine lines and pigmentation.
Is a serum basically a moisturiser?

No. Serums can contain endless moisturising ingredients (such as Rose hip oil in our Rose Moisture Plus Daily Moisture Balancing Serum]) to help skin retain its moisture. But that doesn't make them moisturisers in the traditional sense. Facial lotions and creams are richer and create a barrier on top of the skin to keep all that good stuff in.

What’s the difference between an essence and a serum?

In the Jurlique skin care ritual, water essence comes right before serum. Here’s why: our Activating Water Essence , one of our hero products, is designed to activate the skin’s ability to retain moisture, plus condition and soften skin, preparing it to absorb the full benefit of the serum and moisturiser that follow. They also differ in texture: serums are more concentrated, while you’ll notice water essences have a more fluid feel.

Which serum is right for my skin?

For discolouration, opt for our Purely White Skin Brightening Essence , which features skin-brightening Kakadu Plum extract, the world’s richest natural fruit source of Vitamin C. This powerful concentrate helps reduce the appearance of skin discolouration while also helping to even skin tone.

For dehydration, try our Rose Moisture Plus Daily Moisture Balancing Serum, which is antioxidant rich to replenish dehydrated skin.

For first signs of ageing and increased radiance, press and smooth our Herbal Recovery Signature Serum over your face, neck and décolletage. Rejuvenating Yarrow and smoothing Viola Tricolor extracts help improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and recharge radiance more powerfully than before.

For advanced ageing, reach for our Nutri-Define Superior Retexturising Facial Serum. It contains Biosome5, Ginseng Root extract and Licorice Root extract, a skin-firming complex that also helps to boost the luminosity of your skin.
